Quick Guidance
I want maximum reuse with minimal friction. Pick MIT or ISC — short, permissive, and widely understood.
I want patent protection on top of permissive. Pick Apache 2.0 — adds an explicit patent grant and termination clause.
I want my code (and modifications) to stay open. Pick GPL-3.0 for strong copyleft, or LGPL/MPL-2.0 for file-level/library copyleft.
I want to release into the public domain. Pick Unlicense or CC0-1.0 — note that "public domain" varies by jurisdiction.
I'm shipping a web service, not a library. Consider AGPL-3.0 — it closes the SaaS loophole in the GPL.
